Binion Collection – 1883-O Morgan Silver Dollar

Binion Collection – 1883-O Morgan Silver Dollar

Binion Collection Population - 3,225 Silver Dollars.

Binion Collection - This coin has excellent eye appeal and is solid white which is unusual for coins from this hoard due to the rough handling and less than desirable storage they received under Binion ownership. This is one of the most common Binion Morgan dollars graded and authenticated by NGC.  The 2014 NGC statistics show a population of 3,225 coins while the NGC Census Report 2009 showing a population of 3,108 silver dollars.

Binion Collection – 1883 Morgan Silver Dollar, VAM-10, AU53

Binion Collection Population - 1 Silver Dollar.

Binion Collection – Extremely Rare (Unique) – The 1883 Morgan silver dollar from the Binion Hoard is another of the extremely rare variety with only 3 coins being graded and authenticated. Of the 3 known, 2 are regular variety 1883 Morgan’s and 1 is the VAM-10 variety. The VAM-10 is also a Top-100 classified Morgan.

This coin and date is an excellent example on both how Binion coins are still being returned to NGC for grading upgrades and VAM identifications. The NGC Census Report 2009 only shows the population as 1 coin and it was not a VAM coin while the 2014 report identifies the population of 3 Morgan silver dollars.

Binion Collection – Appearance & Grading

Binion Collection – Appearance & Grading

I have covered this topic in a previous blog a few years ago but thought it may be of value to repeat it for the new Binion collectors entering the hunt.

Appearance & Grading

Eye appearance:  Compared to other hoards, collections and general population coins, Binion silver dollars do not have great (or in many cases even good) eye appeal. This is largely due to the storage and handling the coins received while under Binion ownership and the storage as evidence by the State of Nevada.  In both cases, the coins were commodities (evidence) and not collectibles.  They received rough handling in loading, unloading, transfer and storage activities.  The coins were transferred in work trucks, tossed about like lumps of coal and work equipment was used to load and unload the coins.

Grading:  The NGC labeled Binion coins fall into 3 grading categories.  Coins in the first category were authenticated as being from the hoard and graded.  Graded coins have a “hard” grade like MS63 or AU55. They have a specific and defined grade.  Coins in the second category were authenticated and received “soft” grades.  Examples of soft grades are “Uncirculated” or “Brilliant Uncirculated”.  No numeric grade is assigned. Coins in this group are less desirable than “hard” graded coins.  And coins in the third category were authenticated as from the Binion hoard, but did not receive any grade.  Many difficult to find dated coins fall into this category.  While they are the least desirable to the refined collector, in many cases the rarity of the date/mintmark still creates a market premium for the coin.

Binion Collection – 1882-O Morgan Silver Dollar, MS63

Binion Collection Population - 16 Silver Dollars.

Binion Collection – Very Rare - The NGC 2014 population report for the 1882-O Binion Morgan silver dollar shows only 16 were graded and authenticated. Of the 16 graded/authenticated, only three were graded as MS63 and only 2 with a higher grade. With such a low population, this coin is very rare and in high demand for the Binion Collector.

Binion Collection – There were 1,142 Binion 1881-S Morgan silver dollars authenticated and graded. Of those, 482 were graded MS63 making the series neither rare nor common, but a little more on the difficult side to find. Binion Collection – Both the 2014 and 2009 NGC Census Report show 2, 1881-O Binion Morgan Dollars as receiving “hard” grades and authenticated. The obverse of the coin has an even golden tint while the reverse has a blazing white brilliance.

Binion Collection – 1881 Morgan Silver Dollar, BU

Binion Collection – 1881 Morgan Silver Dollar, BU

Binion Collection Population - Not Available for "Soft" Graded Coins.

Binion Collection – Neither the 2014 nor 2009 NGC Census Reports show any 1881 Philadelphia minted silver dollars as receiving “hard” grades in the Binion hoard. This 1881 Binion received a soft grade of Brilliant Uncirculated and is very desirable to the Binion collector because of the scarcity of the date/mintmark.

Binion Collection – 1880-S Morgan Silver Dollar, MS63

Binion Collection – 1880-S Morgan Silver Dollar, MS63

Binion Collection Population - 26 Silver Dollars.

Binion Collection - Very Rare – Only 26, 1880-S Binion Morgan silver dollars were authenticated and received “hard” grades.  The MS63 coin shown here is a nice representation for a more difficult to find Binion silver dollar. Population statistics are consistent in the 2014 and 2009 census report.

Binion Collection – 1880-S Morgan Silver Dollar, MS62

Binion Collection – 1880-S Morgan Silver Dollar, MS62

Binion Collection Population - 26 Silver Dollars.

Binion Collection - Very Rare – Only 26, 1880-S Binion Morgan silver dollars were authenticated and received “hard” grades. While the eye appeal of the MS62 coin shown here is not all that great, the population rarity demands a healthy market premium for the coin. This population statistic is consistent in the 2014 and 2009 census report.

Binion Collection – 1880-O Morgan Silver Dollar

Binion Collection – 1880-O Morgan Silver Dollar

Binion Collection Population - Not Available for "Soft" Graded Coins.

Binion Collection – No population reports are available from NGC for “Soft” graded coins from the Binion hoard; however, there were only 31, 1880-O Binion’s receiving hard grades.  Of those, 28 were VAM varieties and 3 were solid MS coins (7 different VAM’s – NGC January 2014 statistics and October 2009 Census Report are consistent).   While this coin has a “Soft” grade, it is still an attractive addition to a Binion collection.
